CHAPTER ELEVEN

ANNE POPPED HER straw through the small opening of the lid on her drink before taking a long pull of her sweet tea. As she settled back into her chair, her puckered lips finally leaving her straw, she said, “I really needed that. Talking to people all day is such dry work. And boring. At least, the conversations I have with them are boring. And wrong. So wrong on so many levels. Why yes, Mrs. Hamilton, that dress is very slimming. Ha! It made her look like a sack of potatoes and on her way to a Five Guys Restaurant. But I made my commission.”

Susanna couldn’t help laughing as she shook her head. “You’re terrible.”

Anne shrugged as she reached into the bag for her chicken sandwich. “I have to eat, don’t I? They don’t pay me to be honest, just to sell clothes.”

“That poor lady will go out looking terrible, and her friends will all be laughing behind her back.”

“Then she needs new friends who will tell her she looks like shit and to go home and change. By then, I’ll already have my commission.”

Susanna bit into a waffle fry. She couldn’t believe her friend was so mean to a complete stranger, but then again, Susanna was being worse to her roommates, whom she loved. That morning, she was afraid everything was about to come out into the open, and she wasn’t anywhere near ready to face that fiasco, yet. She knew she needed to come clean, tell the men she loved how she had fallen for both of them, but she just didn’t know how without ruining everyone’s holiday. Or her life.

“Your problem,” Anne said, “is that Caiden is the soft, sweet romantic. He thinks women belong on a pedestal and worshiped. He will not want to see a woman he thinks of as his being treated like some kitchen scow. He’ll be the first to get you busted, mark my words.”

Just then, Susanna’s cell phone dinged with a text message. Sliding the screen to unlock, she saw Caiden’s name. Hey, we’re thinking of grilling out by the pool tonight. You think you could make your famous potato salad?

“Well, looks like they’re playing nice now,” she told Anne. She texted Caiden back. Sure. Everything okay between the two of you now? She hit send and reached for another fry. “I can’t allow them to get hurt, but I don’t see a way out of this.”

“How the hell did you get in it in the first place?”

“I let my curiosity get the better of me.” She took a sip of her tea as she stared down the concourse at the line of kids waiting to see Santa and the fathers checking out the short skirts of Santa’s elves. Something for everyone, according to mall management. “I watched Brandon with Molly and, to be honest, I was more than intrigued. I wanted to know more and, occasionally, would ask a question or two. Yet, he was taken, so I never did more than show interest in his lifestyle, not him.
